So many things have been said about love, from William Shakespeare’s “Thus, with a kiss, I die” to Ed Sheeran’s “I’m in love with the shape of you.” Love is the same in every period, but it also comes in all shapes and sizes. And, sometimes, a love story is so great that songs and movies are made about it.

We at Bright Side are suckers for a good romance. So, we made a list of 5 romantic movies inspired by real-life love stories.

1. The Vow

Imagine waking up one day and losing every memory you have of your spouse. Well, that’s exactly what happened to Krickitt and Kim Carpenter in real life. After a life-threatening car crash, Krickitt had a brain injury and lost all memory she had of her husband Kim.

The couple wrote a book, recalling their experience, called The Vow, which served as inspiration for the movie starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams. Even though Krickitt and Kim aren’t together anymore, their story is one of love and perseverance.

2. The Young Victoria

Queen Victoria (played by Emily Blunt) and her cousin Prince Albert (Rupert Friend) are the protagonists of this iconic love story. Albert was introduced to the 17-year-old princess, and it was love at first sight. Victoria liked Albert, and even though she had another suitor, she was amazed by her cousin.

Victoria was crowned at 18 years old, and by the time she was 20, she proposed to Albert. On her wedding day, she wore a white dress, beginning the white dress tradition for brides. It is said that when Prince Albert passed away, the Queen decided to wear only black dresses for the rest of her life.

3. The Theory of Everything

Starring Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, the movie The Theory of Everything is the story of physicist Stephen Hawking and his former wife, Jane Hawking. Their story is one of love, but also of struggles and challenges. The movie was based on Jane Hawking’s memoir, which focuses on Stephen and Jane’s relationship before, during, and after Stephen’s diagnosis with a disease that made him lose his mobility.

Jane was friends with Stephen’s sister; they met at a party and instantly fell for each other. When Stephen was diagnosed, the doctors told him he only had 2 years to live, and the couple decided to get married. Stephen outlived the doctors’ expectations and spent more time with his children and wife. In 1990, the couple split up, but their love story was immortalized by their memoirs and the romantic movie.

4. The Notebook

The notebook is a romantic drama film based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks. The book tells the story of a love that survives the test of time.

The author has said that the book is based on his wife’s grandparents, played in the movie by Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. Upon meeting them, Nicholas was astonished by how sweetly they treated each other, even after 60 years of marriage. So, he was inspired to write a novel about an everlasting love like theirs.

5. Grace of Monaco

The movie Grace of Monaco tells the love story of former actress Grace Kelly (Nicole Kidman) and Prince Rainier of Monaco (Tim Roth). The couple met when Grace was filming a movie on the French Riviera, and a friendly correspondence started immediately. They even began visiting each other for important occasions, like Christmas.

In 1956, they got married, and she became Princess Grace of Monaco. In an interview, Princess Grace said that she wasn’t impressed by royalty; she was impressed by the man. After their marriage, many acting roles were offered to her, but she gave up acting for the rest of her life to be with her kids and her lovely prince.
